A 3D view of nerves, bone, and soft tissue in seconds, so surgery is planned around what's actually there.

What Is a Cone Beam CT Scan?

More Than a Typical X-Ray

A cone beam CT scan is a special type of X-ray that shows the details of your oral and facial health. It goes further than a typical X-ray because it lets us identify nerve pathways, soft tissue, and bone before treatment begins. The scan takes just seconds in our office and produces a highly detailed image.

Most patients can safely have the scan regardless of age. We review your medical and health history first to confirm it's right for you, and in practice it's often easier and quicker than traditional intraoral X-rays.

Lead Apron On
We place a lead apron over your body before anything starts, the same precaution used with any dental X-ray.
02

You stand straight in the middle of the machine and either rest your chin or bite down gently on a bite bar.
03
Step
The Machine Circles
The scanner rotates around your head, capturing images as it turns. Nothing touches you and nothing is inserted.
04
Step
Reviewed On the Spot
The image is ready within seconds, and we review it with you to plan the treatment you need.
Why Might a CBCT Scan Be Needed?

What the scan lets us see

01
Before Oral Surgery
Most often you'll have a CBCT scan before surgery in our office, so the plan accounts for what's beneath the surface.
02
Nerves, Bone and Soft Tissue
The scan identifies structures that could come into play during a surgical procedure, before we begin rather than during.
03
Emergencies and Hard-to-Find Problems
If you come in with an emergency, or with symptoms we can't pin down, the scan often shows what a standard X-ray misses.
04
Minimal Radiation
The amount of radiation used is minimal and considered safe and beneficial for most patients.
