IV Sedation Dentistry

What Is IV Sedation And What Does It Feel Like?

IV sedation is often a good option for longer or more complex treatments, including many oral surgery procedures. A calming medication is delivered through a small IV line, helping you feel deeply relaxed and comfortable while we work. Our team monitors you throughout the visit, and we’ll review your health history first to make sure IV sedation is a safe fit for you. If you want a calmer, easier appointment, ask about IV sedation at your consultation.

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is typically necessary for oral surgeries and more complicated dental procedures. It involves placing a small IV into the arm and delivering a safe sedative into your system. You will slowly enter a sleep-like state, making the procedure more comfortable and easier for you. IV sedation is safe for most patients, and it's often needed if you'll be undergoing more invasive treatments.

Why Is IV Sedation Needed?

IV sedation is needed when a procedure is longer, more involved, or stressful enough that staying comfortable with only local numbing could be tough. It helps you stay deeply relaxed, keeps anxiety and gag reflex under control, and makes it easier to get through treatment without feeling overwhelmed. It can also help the dentist work more efficiently during complex care, which often means fewer interruptions and a smoother appointment overall.

Is Sedation Safe For Me?

Many patients are great candidates for IV sedation. Before we recommend it, we’ll review your full health history, medications, and any conditions that could affect sedation safety. If you’ve been told you can’t have sedation, or you’ve had a reaction in the past, let us know right away so we can plan the most comfortable option for you. IV sedation may be appropriate for both adults and children when needed.

What Is The IV Sedation Process Like?

You’ll get comfortable in one of our treatment rooms, then we’ll start your IV and begin the medication. Within about 15 minutes, most patients feel very relaxed and drift into a light, sleep-like state. While you’re resting comfortably, we complete the planned treatment.

Afterward, we stop the medication and move you to a recovery area so you can wake up at your own pace. Since you’ll still be groggy, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home.
