ABOUT BONE AND SOFT TISSUE GRAFTING

What is the purpose of grafting?

Utilizing bone and soft tissue grafts can help repair deficient areas, allowing for reconstruction options that may not have been possible otherwise.

When a tooth is missing, the surrounding bone can begin to resorb, leading to a decrease in both height and width. This resorption can also impact the gum tissue above, resulting in a loss of volume and the natural shape of the area. Following a tooth extraction, this loss of bone and gum tissue can cause functional and aesthetic issues, creating a collapsed appearance.

Dr. Sista at Dentiq Dentistry Houston focuses on proactively preserving tissue. Advances in grafting procedures and bioengineering have made it possible to significantly reduce or eliminate bone and gum tissue loss after tooth extractions. For example, a specially bioengineered dental bone graft material can be placed in the extraction socket after a tooth is removed. This material helps promote new bone growth and has been shown to maintain bone and soft tissue following tooth extraction.

Can you explain how bone grafting works?

Grafting is a safe procedure, and we will thoroughly discuss your options with you before the surgery to ensure you receive the right treatment for your needs. You will typically receive a local anesthetic to minimize pain during the procedure, and intravenous sedation is available if needed. After the surgery, you will be given antibiotics and pain medication if necessary. It is important to avoid certain foods to prevent putting pressure on the graft. You should be able to resume your normal daily activities while the graft heals.

What type of person is an ideal candidate for Bone Grafting?

For individuals looking to add implants to their mouths but lacking sufficient bone for safe and secure installation, bone grafting is the ideal solution.
